Schools. Palo Alto is known for its schools — Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) is routinely among the top public school districts in California. Palo Alto High School (Paly) and Henry M. Gunn High School are both California Distinguished Schools and consistently rank among the top-10 public high schools in the state. Middle schools: Jane Lathrop Stanford, JLS; Terman; Greene; Fletcher. Private options include Castilleja (girls, 6-12), Pinewood School, Stratford School, and the elite Keys School. Stanford University is the defining institution of the city.

Hospitals. Stanford Hospital (500 Pasteur Drive) and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford are the cornerstone medical centers — Level I trauma, consistently ranked among the top 10 hospitals in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, and the academic medical center for the entire mid-Peninsula. Stanford Emergency Department, Stanford Cancer Institute, and Stanford Heart & Vascular Services draw patients from across the country. El Camino Hospital (Mountain View) is 10 minutes south. Parks and nature.
