About Lafayette. Lafayette (population ~25,000, incorporated 1968) sits between Orinda and Walnut Creek along Highway 24. The city's settlement began in 1848 when pioneer Elam Brown bought 3,328 acres of Rancho Acalanes; the town grew slowly as a rural agricultural community before becoming one of the Bay Area's most sought-after family suburbs after the Caldecott Tunnel opened in 1937. Private options include Bentley School (K-12, independent, 29-acre Upper School campus in Lafayette's Hidden Valley), and Contra Costa Christian Schools.

Hospitals. John Muir Health — Walnut Creek Medical Center (10 minutes east) is the region's Level II trauma center and primary full-service hospital. Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek is 8 minutes east. Alta Bates Summit Oakland Campus is 15 minutes west through the Caldecott. UCSF Parnassus / Mission Bay is 40 minutes west for specialty care. Local dispatcher tip. Caldecott Tunnel westbound is Lafayette's signature bottleneck — 6:30-9 AM weekday adds 20-40 minutes to SFO runs. For pre-7 AM flights we clear the tunnel before 6:30 AM or route via I-580 south + San Mateo Bridge. The Lafayette Art & Wine Festival (September Saturday-Sunday) closes most of Mt. Diablo Boulevard downtown — we stage at the Lafayette Reservoir parking lot during that weekend. Lafayette Reservoir day-use on Saturday mornings packs First Street / Mt.
