About Moraga. Moraga (population ~17,000, incorporated 1974) is the southernmost of the three Lamorinda towns, tucked into the rolling hills of the EBMUD watershed. The town is named for Joaquín Moraga, a grandson of the Spanish explorer José Joaquín Moraga (who founded the Presidio and Mission Dolores in 1776) — Joaquín was granted the 13,316-acre Rancho Laguna de los Palos Colorados in 1835, which encompassed what is now Moraga and most of the Lamorinda region. The town's identity today is shaped by Saint Mary's College of California and by its extraordinary network of EBMUD trails and open space.

Saint Mary's College of California (1863 founded, 1928 moved to Moraga — the second-oldest Catholic college in California, 3,200 students on a 420-acre campus, home to the Saint Mary's Gaels — the nationally-known basketball program that's produced NBA players including Patrick Mills and Matthew Dellavedova), the Hacienda de las Flores (the historic 19-acre estate at 2100 Donald Drive — now the Moraga Community Center for weddings and events), Rheem Valley Shopping Center (the town's main commercial district at Rheem Boulevard / Moraga Road), the Rheem Theatre (historic 1957 single-screen cinema, now an art-house revival house), Moraga Country Club (18-hole golf + tennis in the hills), and the Soda Aquatic Center.

Schools. The Moraga School District (K-8 — Camino Pablo, Los Perales, Rheem) consistently ranks among the top public elementary districts in California. Middle-school students attend Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School, which feeds into Moraga's flagship public high school: Campolindo High School — a California Distinguished School, National Blue Ribbon School, and one of the top 20 public high schools in California (part of the elite Acalanes Union High School District). Saint Mary's College High School is actually in Berkeley, but Moraga's own college is Saint Mary's College of California (4-year, Lasallian Catholic, NCAA Division I). Private K-8: Orinda Academy is adjacent.

Hospitals. John Muir Health — Walnut Creek Medical Center (15 minutes east) is the regional Level II trauma center and primary hospital. Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek is 15 minutes east. Alta Bates Summit Oakland Campus is 20 minutes west through the Caldecott. San Ramon Regional Medical Center is 20 minutes south. Our drivers run standing medical-transport accounts to all of these.

Parks and nature. Moraga's backyard is one of the largest contiguous protected watersheds in the Bay Area — EBMUD Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail (7.7 miles of paved trail through the EBMUD right-of-way), Las Trampas Regional Wilderness (5,342 acres directly south with spectacular ridge hiking), Redwood Regional Park (1,830 acres of second-growth coast redwood in the hills to the west), Moraga Commons Park (the central city park with bandshell and community events), the Hacienda de las Flores grounds, and access to Briones Regional Park (20 minutes north).

Local dispatcher tip. The Caldecott Tunnel westbound (6:30-9 AM weekdays) is the standard Moraga-to-SFO bottleneck — we pad 20 minutes for early airport runs. The two-lane roads into and out of Moraga (Moraga Road, Camino Pablo) can back up during Saint Mary's basketball game nights at University Credit Union Pavilion (home of the Gaels) — game-day dispatcher tip: enter from Rheem Boulevard if coming from Lafayette rather than fighting Moraga Road. Saint Mary's College commencement (mid-May) and Moraga Pear Festival (late September) both pack Moraga Commons and Rheem Valley.
