Hillsborough's famous mansions. Hillsborough is home to some of the most extraordinary private estates in California. Carolands Chateau on Remillard Drive is the best known — a 65,000-square-foot, 98-room Beaux-Arts palace begun in 1914 for Harriett Pullman Carolan, heir to the Pullman railway fortune. Designed by Paris architect Ernest Sanson in the model of Vaux-le-Vicomte, with grounds laid out by Achille Duchêne and local execution by San Francisco's Willis Polk. Carolands is on the National Register of Historic Places; the nonprofit that owns it now opens it for public tours. The "Uplands" estate (William H. Crocker's 1913 Willis Polk-designed mansion) is now the campus of Crystal Springs Uplands School. And yes — the famous Flintstone House (the purple-and-orange 1976 Flintstones-themed landmark visible from I-280) is in Hillsborough. Nothing else in the Bay Area looks remotely like it.

Big Hillsborough sales our drivers have watched happen. In 2021, Elon Musk sold his Hillsborough estate at 891 Crystal Springs Road — the historic De Guigne Estate — for \$30 million. Musk had bought the 47.5-acre property (with its 16,000 sq ft French-chateau mansion) for \$23.4M in 2017. The \$30M close was the second-highest sale in Hillsborough history, behind only 835 Chiltern at \$37.5M in 2000. The Hillsborough City School District (K-8, ~1,600 students) is one of the highest-performing public elementary districts in California — North Hillsborough Elementary, West Hillsborough Elementary, South Hillsborough Elementary, and Crocker Middle School. Hillsborough has no high school of its own; students feed into San Mateo Union High School District (typically Burlingame HS or Aragon HS). Nueva School (private, PreK-12, innovative curriculum) is on Hillsborough's Bay Meadows-era Crocker Mansion campus. Crystal Springs Uplands private school is adjacent.

Hospitals. Mills-Peninsula Medical Center is 5-10 minutes north in Burlingame — Sutter Health's Peninsula flagship, Level II trauma. Stanford Hospital is 20 minutes south. Parks and nature.
