About Orinda. Orinda (population ~19,900, incorporated 1985 — one of the youngest chartered cities in California) is the northernmost of the three "Lamorinda" communities (Lafayette-Moraga-Orinda) in central Contra Costa County. The city is famous for its Orinda Theatre, its direct Caldecott-Tunnel proximity to San Francisco and Oakland (one of the shortest commutes from a wealthy-suburb zip code to downtown SF), and for consistently ranking among the highest-income and best-educated cities in California. The name "Orinda" comes from the poetic pseudonym of 17th-century English poet Katherine Philips, "The Matchless Orinda".

Landmarks our drivers know. The Orinda Theatre (the gorgeous 1941 Art Deco movie palace at 2 Theatre Square — a Bay Area architectural landmark, restored, still operating as a movie house), Santa Maria Catholic Church (1947, one of the town's historic centerpieces), Theatre Square (downtown Orinda's main commercial center), the Orinda Community Center, the Orinda BART station (a major Caldecott-to-SF transit hub), and the Orinda Country Club (1924, 18-hole golf + tennis club). For outdoor recreation, Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve sits right on Orinda's western ridge and Briones Regional Park (6,117 acres) is 10 minutes north.

Schools. The Orinda Union School District (K-8) consistently ranks among the top 10 public elementary districts in California. Four elementaries (Del Rey, Glorietta, Sleepy Hollow, Wagner Ranch) feed into Orinda Intermediate School, which then feeds into Orinda's public high school: Miramonte High School — a California Distinguished School and National Blue Ribbon School, routinely ranked in the top 25 public high schools in California (part of the elite Acalanes Union High School District shared with Lafayette and Moraga). Private options include Saint Stephen Catholic School (K-8) and Holden High School (alternative private high school).

Hospitals. John Muir Health — Walnut Creek Medical Center (15 minutes east) is the regional trauma and full-service hospital. Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek is 15 minutes east. Local dispatcher tip. Caldecott Tunnel westbound is Orinda's signature bottleneck — weekday 6:30-9 AM adds 20-40 minutes, and Warriors or Giants event evenings make 4-7 PM eastbound painful. For pre-7 AM SFO runs we aim to clear the Caldecott before 6:30. Miramonte High School sports events and Orinda Country Club member events occasionally affect downtown Moraga Way and Camino Pablo pickup timing. The Orinda Theatre opening-night film-festival programming also brings Theatre Square parking chaos — we stage at the Community Center lot.
