About Mill Valley. Mill Valley (population ~14,500, incorporated 1900) sits at the base of Mt. Tamalpais in southern Marin County and gets its name from John Reed's 1830s redwood sawmill on Old Mill Creek. It's a small, wooded, creative town famous for its music and film scene and for the kind of redwood-shaded canyons that feel a world away from downtown San Francisco (which is only 12 miles south). Famous past and present residents include Jerry Garcia, Sammy Hagar, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, Maria Shriver, George Lucas, and countless others from the music, film, and literary worlds.

Landmarks our drivers know. Downtown "The Depot" (the historic 1929 train depot, now the Depot Café and Bookstore — the center of downtown life), Old Mill Park (the original 1834 sawmill site on Old Mill Creek with its grove of giant redwoods), the 142 Throckmorton Theatre (intimate music and comedy venue), the Outdoor Art Club (historic Bernard Maybeck-designed clubhouse), Mill Valley Market, the Sweetwater Music Hall, and the starting lines for the Dipsea Race and the Dipsea Trail into Muir Woods. We run a lot of visitors to Muir Woods National Monument, which is a 5-minute drive uphill.

The Mill Valley Film Festival. The Mill Valley Film Festival (MVFF) held every October at the Smith Rafael Film Center, the Sequoia Theater, and the Throckmorton is one of the most respected independent film festivals in the country — eleven days of premieres, Oscar-contender advance screenings, and celebrity drop-ins. We handle a lot of talent transportation during MVFF week.

Schools. Mill Valley students attend the highly-ranked Mill Valley School District (K-8 — Old Mill, Park, Strawberry Point, Tamalpais Valley, Edna Maguire, Mill Valley Middle). High-schoolers feed into the Tamalpais Union High School District — Tamalpais High School (Tam High) and Redwood High School (Larkspur) are both routinely ranked among the top public high schools in California. Private options include Marin Country Day School (in Corte Madera, K-8), Marin Academy (San Rafael, 9-12), and Branson School (Ross, 9-12).

Hospitals. MarinHealth Medical Center (Greenbrae, 10 minutes north on 101) is Marin County's primary hospital — the only full-service acute-care hospital in the county, Level III trauma, and the core partner for UCSF Health in the North Bay. Kaiser Permanente San Rafael is 15 minutes north. UCSF Parnassus / Mission Bay campuses are 25-30 minutes south across the Golden Gate. We handle regular medical-transport runs to all three.

Parks and nature. Mill Valley is surrounded by some of the best parkland in California. Mt. Tamalpais State Park (6,300 acres, East and West Peak, Matt Davis and Steep Ravine trails, Pantoll and Bootjack), Muir Woods National Monument (554-acre old-growth redwood grove, one of the most-visited National Park Service sites on the West Coast), the Dipsea Trail (7-mile historic trail from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach), Cascade Canyon Open Space, Old Mill Park, and Marin Headlands (8 minutes south).

Airport drive times from Mill Valley. SFO: 30-40 minutes (20 miles, via Golden Gate Bridge + 101 south). OAK: 40-55 minutes (30 miles, via Richmond/San Rafael Bridge). SJC: 75-90 minutes (63 miles, via GGB + 101). Mill Valley is also a 25-minute Golden Gate Ferry ride from the San Francisco Ferry Building for clients who prefer that over a drive.

Local dispatcher tip. Golden Gate Bridge traffic is the single biggest variable on any Mill Valley-to-SFO run — southbound is bad 7-10 AM weekdays, and any incident or lane closure on the bridge can add 30 minutes. We watch 511 and Twitter GG Bridge alerts before every morning airport run and route via the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge + 580/880 to OAK if SFO-via-GGB is compromised. Also: during the Mill Valley Film Festival, Dipsea Race weekend (second Sunday of June), and Mt. Tam hiking traffic on sunny Saturdays, Shoreline Highway/1 and the roads up Mt. Tam can back up significantly.
