Millbrae history — and how SFO was born on a Mills estate cow pasture. Millbrae takes its name from Darius Ogden Mills, the 19th-century banking magnate who bought the land in 1860 and built the grand “Millbrae” estate — a mansion, conservatory, carriage house, formal gardens, and rolling hills grazed by dairy cattle. He coined the name himself, joining Mills with the Scottish word brae (“hillside”). Decades after the estate was subdivided into the town, the City of San Francisco leased 150 acres of the Mills estate's bayfront pasture on March 15, 1927 and dedicated it that May as Mills Field Municipal Airport — built, quite literally, on a cow pasture.
