Major private schools: Junipero Serra High School (the Padres — the all-boys Catholic school in San Mateo where Tom Brady played, and where Lynn Swann and Barry Bonds also attended), Notre Dame High School in Belmont (the all-girls Catholic counterpart), Mercy High School Burlingame, and Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough. Higher education: College of San Mateo (the community college on top of the hill at 1700 W Hillsdale Boulevard, with sweeping Bay views), and Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont.

Hospitals. Mills-Peninsula Medical Center (the major Sutter Health peninsula hospital, technically just over the Burlingame border on El Camino Real, 5 minutes north — the regional Level III trauma center for the peninsula). Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco Medical Center 5 minutes north on El Camino. San Mateo Medical Center (the San Mateo County hospital on Edison Street) for emergency care. For specialty care: Stanford Health Care (20 minutes south for transplant, oncology, cardiac), and UCSF Medical Center (15 minutes north for academic medicine). Airport drive times from San Mateo. SFO: 10–15 minutes (8 miles via US-101 north). OAK: 25–35 minutes via the San Mateo Bridge (CA-92 east) — San Mateo's geographic advantage is the bridge access; we get to OAK faster from San Mateo than from most other peninsula cities. SJC: 25–30 minutes south on US-101. San Carlos Airport (SQL) for private aviation: 5 minutes south on US-101. Hayward Executive (HWD) for private aviation: 30 minutes east via San Mateo Bridge.
