About Woodside. Woodside (population ~5,500, incorporated 1956) is one of the most exclusive and distinctive towns in the Bay Area — equestrian-zoned, no commercial district beyond a tiny Town Center, and required to keep large lots and rural character by design. It's home to Silicon Valley's quietest money: tech founders and investors who wanted the opposite of a gated-community feel. Famous residents over the years include Larry Ellison (whose 23-acre Japanese-inspired compound is a Woodside landmark), Neil Young (Broken Arrow Ranch on Woodside Hill for decades), Steve Jobs (who owned the historic Jackling House on Mountain Home Road), John Doerr, and countless venture capital partners from neighboring Sand Hill Road.

Filoli — Woodside's most famous estate. Filoli is the 654-acre country estate on Cañada Road that has been one of Northern California's great historic houses since its completion in 1917. Built by gold-mining and utility magnate William Bowers Bourn II and designed by Willis Polk, the 43-room Georgian Revival mansion and its 16-acre formal gardens are now operated by a National Trust for Historic Preservation-affiliated nonprofit and open to the public. Filoli is famous far beyond the Bay Area: it was the exterior of the Carrington mansion in the 1980s TV series "Dynasty" — the aerial shots in the opening credits are Filoli — and it has been a filming location for Heaven Can Wait, Harold & Maude, The Joy Luck Club, The Wedding Planner, and many more. Other Woodside landmarks. The Village Pub (the one-Michelin-star pub on Woodside Road that's a fixture of Peninsula fine dining), Buck's of Woodside (the quirky breakfast spot where countless VC deals have been done since 1991), Roberts Market (the beloved local grocery in the town center), the Woodside Store Historical Site (the 1854 general store museum), the Pioneer Saloon, and the annual Woodside Day of the Horse. For recreation: Mountain Home Ranch, Thornewood Open Space Preserve, and the trailheads into Huddart and Wunderlich.

Schools. Woodside Elementary School District (K-8, single-school district centered on the historic Woodside Elementary) is one of the top-rated public elementary districts in California. High-schoolers feed into the Sequoia Union High School District — typically Woodside High (in Redwood City) or Menlo-Atherton. Woodside Priory School (private, Benedictine, 6-12, on a scenic 50-acre campus) is a signature Woodside private option. Stanford University is 15 minutes east.

Hospitals. Sequoia Hospital (Dignity Health) in Redwood City is 10 minutes down the hill — the closest full-service hospital. Stanford Hospital is 20 minutes east (via Sand Hill Road) — Level I trauma, academic medical center, routinely ranked among the top 10 hospitals in the U.S. Kaiser Permanente Redwood City is 12 minutes east. Parks and nature. Woodside is surrounded by some of the best hiking and open space on the Peninsula. Huddart County Park (975 acres of coast redwoods and equestrian trails). OAK: 40-50 minutes (32 miles, via 101 + San Mateo or Dumbarton Bridge). Palo Alto Airport (PAO) and San Carlos Airport (SQL) for private aviation are both 15 minutes.

Local dispatcher tip. Woodside's winding, unlit roads — Mountain Home Road, Old La Honda, Kings Mountain, upper Cañada — can add 8-10 minutes to an early-morning SFO run compared with what Google Maps estimates. We pad 15 minutes on every Woodside pre-dawn airport pickup. Also: Skylonda (Alice's Restaurant corner at Skyline and Woodside Road) sees Sunday-morning motorcyclist traffic that slows things 10-20 minutes — we route via 84 and 280 instead for Sunday-AM airport runs.
