About San Rafael. San Rafael (population ~61,000, incorporated 1874) is the largest city in Marin County and its county seat. Its history begins with Mission San Rafael Arcángel, founded in 1817 as the 20th of California's 21 Spanish missions — originally established as a hospital outpost for sick Ohlone people from Mission Dolores in San Francisco who needed a sunnier climate. The modern city combines a walkable historic downtown on Fourth Street, a large and diverse residential population, the county government center, and the longtime Marin headquarters of George Lucas's film empire.

Landmarks our drivers know. The Marin County Civic Center (McInnis Parkway / North San Pedro Road) is one of the most important buildings in Northern California — Frank Lloyd Wright's final major commission, completed in 1962 after his death. A National Historic Landmark, it's the filming location for George Lucas's THX 1138 and Andrew Niccol's Gattaca. Also: Mission San Rafael Arcángel (a 1949 reconstruction on the original site), Historic Downtown Fourth Street (the main shopping/dining/theater corridor, with the 1946 Rafael Film Center), Dominican University of California (1890, 80-acre campus), the Lucasfilm / ILM legacy locations on Kerner Boulevard, and China Camp State Park (1,640 acres on San Pablo Bay, the historic 19th-century Chinese shrimp-fishing village preserved intact).

Schools. San Rafael City Schools runs the main public K-12 system. San Rafael High School and Terra Linda High School both sit in that district. Marin's high-ranking Dixie School District covers north San Rafael's K-8. Private options include Marin Academy (9-12, 107 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard — one of the Bay Area's most selective independent high schools), San Domenico School (PreK-12, on a 515-acre campus), Marin Catholic High School (Kentfield, 9-12), and St. Raphael School (K-8 Catholic). Dominican University of California is the city's 4-year university.

Hospitals. Kaiser Permanente San Rafael Medical Center (Nova Albion Way) is the primary hospital inside San Rafael, with a full-service medical campus. MarinHealth Medical Center (neighboring Greenbrae, 5 minutes south) is Marin County's only full-service acute-care hospital and Level III trauma center. UCSF Parnassus / Mission Bay campuses are 40-45 minutes south across the Golden Gate Bridge. Our drivers run regular medical-transport accounts to all three.

Parks and nature. Airport drive times from San Rafael. SFO: 40-50 minutes (25 miles, via 101 + Golden Gate Bridge south). OAK: 45-55 minutes (27 miles, via Richmond/San Rafael Bridge + 580). SJC: 85-95 minutes (67 miles, via GGB + 101). Gnoss Field (DVO) in Novato for private aviation is 15 minutes north.

Local dispatcher tip. Golden Gate Bridge southbound is the big bottleneck — weekday 7-10 AM adds 25-40 minutes, Giants or Warriors game nights in SF compound it. Our standard pad for early SFO runs from San Rafael is 20 minutes on top of Google's estimate. If 101 south is compromised (accident, protest, weekend Marin event traffic), we route via the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge + 580 + 880 + San Mateo Bridge to hit SFO from the east side. For OAK runs we default to the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge no matter the time of day — faster and cheaper in toll than going back through the city.
