About Sausalito. Sausalito (population ~7,200, incorporated 1893) is the tiny Marin County city immediately north of the Golden Gate Bridge, built on the hillside above Richardson Bay. The name is a Spanish diminutive for "little willow grove." Sausalito has two completely different personalities: the postcard-perfect downtown waterfront (Bridgeway, art galleries, Scoma's, The Trident, Sally Stanford's Valhalla legacy) that receives 2 million tourists a year via ferry, and the historic houseboat community on Richardson Bay, a Bohemian floating-home community dating to World War II-era shipyard workers that now includes some of the most distinctive and valuable waterfront residences in the country.

Bridgeway (the waterfront main drag with its restaurants, galleries, and the famous postcard view across the bay to San Francisco), the Sausalito Ferry Terminal (Golden Gate Ferry to the San Francisco Ferry Building — a 30-minute ride), the Sausalito Houseboats at Waldo Point Harbor (the famously whimsical floating homes in Gate 5, Issaquah Dock, and Main Dock), the Bay Model Visitor Center (the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' 1.5-acre working scale model of the San Francisco Bay — remarkable, free, a must-see), the Sausalito Art Festival (Labor Day weekend, one of the top juried art festivals on the West Coast), Cavallo Point Lodge (the historic Fort Baker officers-quarters turned luxury resort at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge), and Sausalito Yacht Harbor.

Schools. The Sausalito Marin City School District serves K-8 students. High-schoolers feed into the Tamalpais Union High School District — primarily Tamalpais High School (Tam High) in Mill Valley, consistently ranked among the top public high schools in California. Private options include Marin Country Day School (Corte Madera, K-8), Marin Academy (San Rafael, 9-12), and Branson School (Ross, 9-12). The Bay School of San Francisco is 10 minutes across the bridge.

Hospitals. MarinHealth Medical Center (Greenbrae, 15 minutes north on 101) is Marin County's primary hospital — the only full-service acute-care hospital in the county, Level III trauma, partnered with UCSF Health. Kaiser Permanente San Rafael is 20 minutes north. UCSF Parnassus / Mission Bay campuses are 15-20 minutes south across the Golden Gate Bridge — UCSF is actually closer to Sausalito than MarinHealth during non-rush hours.

Parks and nature. Marin Headlands (immediately adjacent — Rodeo Beach, Battery Spencer overlook with the most-photographed Golden Gate Bridge view in the world, Point Bonita Lighthouse, the Headlands hostel, and miles of hiking), Angel Island State Park (reachable by ferry from Sausalito — 740 acres of bay-view hiking and the historic Immigration Station), Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary, Bothin Marsh Preserve, and the Tiburon Loop Trail along the Richardson Bay waterfront. Mt. Tam State Park is 15 minutes inland.

Local dispatcher tip. Golden Gate Bridge southbound is Sausalito's signature SFO bottleneck — mornings 7-10 AM, evenings 4-7 PM, and any Warriors/Giants game night at Chase Center or Oracle Park. For early SFO runs from Sausalito we aim to clear the bridge before 6:45 AM. On summer weekends, Bridgeway tourist traffic can make even a 10-minute local run take 25 minutes — we stage on Princess Street or take Easterby to reach downtown pickups.
