Direct flat-rate Black SUV and limousine transfer from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Big Sur, the Carmel Highlands gateway, Post Ranch Inn, Ventana Big Sur, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, McWay Falls, Treebones Resort, and the entire SR-1 California coastal corridor — about 3.5 to 4 hours via US-101 South to SR-68 West to SR-1 South. Real-time flight tracking, professional chauffeurs who know the cell-dead SR-1 stretches, CPUC TCP# 9225. Since 1986.
Flying into SFO for a Post Ranch Inn anniversary, a Ventana Big Sur wellness retreat, a Treebones yurt getaway, a Big Sur Marathon weekend, or a multi-day Bixby Bridge / McWay Falls / Pfeiffer Beach photo expedition? Big Sur is California's most dramatic coastal stretch — 90 miles of SR-1 between Carmel Highlands and Ragged Point with no cell service for long stretches, no street lights, no chain hotels, and absolutely no rideshare reliability. We have been dispatching the SF to Big Sur corridor since 1986 and our chauffeurs know which mile markers go dark for cell coverage, which gates require advance notice, and how to handle SR-1 closures and mudslide detours.
Between Carmel Highlands and Cambria there are long stretches with zero cell signal. Our dispatch confirms property gate codes, driver Big Sur arrival time, and your specific cabin / room number BEFORE the driver enters the cell-dead zone. Many Big Sur properties (Post Ranch, Ventana, Deetjen's, Treebones) have gate intercoms that work on their own intranet — we know which.
SR-1 Big Sur has experienced multi-month closures at Mud Creek, Rocky Creek, and Paul's Slide. Our dispatch monitors Caltrans road status daily during storm season (December–April). For closures we re-route via US-101 south to Paso Robles then SR-46 West to SR-1 to access southern Big Sur destinations from the south, or limit service to the northern Big Sur area if the closure is south of Pfeiffer.
SR-1 south of Carmel Highlands has effectively zero street lighting. Night pickups from Big Sur properties back to SFO require chauffeurs with significant SR-1 night-driving experience. We dispatch only chauffeurs who have driven the Big Sur corridor at night many times — the tight switchbacks at Hurricane Point and the Big Sur River Bridge approaches require focused attention.
Uber and Lyft drivers from the SF Bay rarely accept Big Sur pickups because of the 90-mile dead-zone return drive. Most Big Sur properties advise guests to pre-book private ground transport. Airport Commuter has been dispatching this corridor since 1986 — we never decline a Big Sur run because of distance or remoteness.
40 years of Big Sur corridor dispatch — straight answers.
Roughly 3.5 to 4 hours in light traffic via US-101 south to Salinas, then SR-68 West to Monterey, then SR-1 South into Big Sur. Carmel Highlands (north Big Sur) is approximately 2.5 hours from SFO; Post Ranch Inn and Ventana Big Sur are 3.5 to 4 hours; Lucia, New Camaldoli, and Treebones Resort (south Big Sur) are 4 to 4.5 hours. Heavy summer-weekend traffic on US-101 through Salinas and SR-1 south of Monterey can extend this by 30–60 minutes.
Flat rate, not metered. Pricing depends on destination (Carmel Highlands vs Post Ranch vs Treebones is a meaningful difference in mileage and drive time) and vehicle (Lincoln MKT sedan vs Cadillac Escalade Black SUV vs Mercedes Sprinter for groups). Returning evening pickups from Big Sur to SFO require dispatcher planning because SR-1 has no street lighting and most Big Sur properties are 3.5–4 hours from SFO. All of them. Carmel Highlands: Hyatt Carmel Highlands, Tickle Pink Inn, Mission Ranch. Northern Big Sur: Big Sur River Inn, Glen Oaks Big Sur, Big Sur Lodge, Fernwood Resort, Ripplewood. Central Big Sur: Post Ranch Inn, Ventana Big Sur (Alila Auberge), Deetjen's Big Sur Inn. Southern Big Sur: Lucia Lodge, New Camaldoli Hermitage, Treebones Resort. We coordinate with each property's gate, porte-cochere, or trailhead pickup.
Pebble Beach and Carmel-by-the-Sea are at the north end of the Monterey Peninsula and roughly 2–2.5 hours from SFO. Big Sur starts roughly 30 minutes south of Carmel-by-the-Sea on SR-1 and extends about 90 miles south to Ragged Point and San Simeon (Hearst Castle). Big Sur is more remote, the drive is more dramatic but slower (SR-1 has tight switchbacks, narrow shoulders, and no street lights), and many Big Sur properties require advance gate notice or driver coordination.
Yes. Many guests book the SFO transfer plus a same-day or next-day chauffeur tour: Bixby Creek Bridge, Hurricane Point, Point Sur Lighthouse, Pfeiffer Beach (purple-sand beach), Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park redwood groves, Henry Miller Memorial Library, Nepenthe restaurant, McWay Falls overlook in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and Garrapata State Park beach hikes. Half-day, full-day, and multi-day chauffeur arrangements available. See Carmel-Monterey-Tour for combined SF Bay tour packages.
1–3 passengers: Lincoln MKT executive sedan or Mercedes-Benz S-Class. 4–6 passengers with luggage: Cadillac Escalade or Mercedes GLS Black SUV. 7–13 passengers: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter executive van — common for corporate retreats at Ventana and Post Ranch. Larger groups (14+) we coordinate multi-vehicle convoys or a single mini-coach. Stretch limos are not recommended on SR-1 south of Carmel Highlands due to the tight curves and narrow shoulders.
Hearst Castle in San Simeon sits at the south end of the Big Sur coastal corridor, roughly 4.5–5 hours from SFO via US-101 south to Paso Robles, then SR-46 west to SR-1. For Hearst Castle visits we typically recommend overnight stays in Cambria, Cayucos, Morro Bay, or Paso Robles instead of round-trip same-day from SFO. We coordinate with Cavalier Oceanfront Resort, Cambria Pines Lodge, Cass House Inn, and Paso Robles luxury hotels (Allegretto, Hotel Cheval, JUST Inn at JUSTIN winery).
SR-1 Big Sur has historically experienced multi-month closures due to mudslides at Mud Creek, Rocky Creek, and Paul's Slide. Our dispatch monitors Caltrans road status daily during storm season (December–April). For closures we re-route via US-101 south to Paso Robles then SR-46 West to SR-1 to access southern Big Sur, or limit service to the northern Carmel Highlands / Big Sur Lodge / Pfeiffer Big Sur area if the closure is south of Pfeiffer. Caltrans info: 1-800-427-7623.
Standard route: US-101 south from SFO through San Jose / Salinas, exit SR-68 West (Salinas-Monterey Highway) to Monterey, then SR-1 South through Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Highlands, Garrapata, and into Big Sur proper. The total SFO to Post Ranch Inn drive is approximately 195 miles. For destinations south of central Big Sur (Lucia, New Camaldoli, Treebones, San Simeon) we may use US-101 south to Paso Robles then SR-46 West to SR-1 South to avoid the slowest portion of SR-1.
Three ways to confirm your transfer. Whichever you choose, the same flat-rate, CPUC-licensed, 40-year-experienced Black SUV service that has been quietly dispatching the SF–Big Sur corridor since 1986.
