Flying into OAK on Southwest, Alaska, or Spirit for a Post Ranch anniversary, Ventana wellness retreat, or Treebones yurt getaway? OAK is a slightly longer drive than SFO to Big Sur (~30 minutes more) because of the I-880 East Bay corridor through Hayward, Fremont, and San Jose — but OAK has the same direct Big Sur access through Monterey and SR-1. From OAK we exit Hegenberger Road south to I-880, then south through San Leandro / Hayward / Fremont / Milpitas into San Jose, where I-880 ends at US-101. South on US-101 through downtown San Jose / Morgan Hill / Gilroy / Salinas. Exit SR-68 West (Salinas-Monterey Highway) to Monterey, then SR-1 South through Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Highlands, Garrapata, and into Big Sur proper. Total ~215 miles to Post Ranch Inn.
If you're flying Southwest, Alaska, JSX, or other OAK-focused carriers, OAK can be the better choice despite the slightly longer drive — you avoid SFO TSA crowds, OAK has typically shorter rental-car and rideshare lines, and the Big Sur destination wait-time difference is small relative to total trip length. For early-morning Big Sur arrivals (red-eye flights into OAK), our overnight dispatch coordinates pre-positioned drivers.
The I-880 corridor between OAK and San Jose carries heavy commute traffic 6–10 AM and 3–7 PM. Weekend traffic is generally lighter but Sunday return-traffic from the South Bay can stack up around Milpitas. We plan OAK Big Sur departure times to avoid the worst I-880 stretches when possible (early-morning or mid-day pickups are optimal).
Once on SR-1 south of Monterey, the OAK and SFO routes converge to identical Big Sur access. Roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours in light traffic via I-880 South to US-101 South to SR-156 / SR-1 South into the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur. OAK is slightly farther from Big Sur than SFO because of the I-880 corridor through the East Bay industrial belt and San Jose. Carmel Highlands runs about 3 hours; Post Ranch Inn and Ventana Big Sur are 3.5 to 4 hours; Treebones Resort (southern Big Sur) is 4.5 to 5 hours.
Either works. OAK is typically a slightly longer drive (~30 minutes more vs SFO) because of the I-880 East Bay corridor. SFO is preferred for guests staying in Carmel Highlands or northern Big Sur. OAK can be preferable if you have Southwest or Alaska connections, or if you want to avoid the SFO TSA crowds. Either way, we pre-position your driver at the FBO or terminal and the Big Sur drive itself is the same SR-1 corridor experience.

SR-1 Big Sur has historically experienced multi-month closures due to mudslides at Mud Creek, Rocky Creek, and Paul's Slide. Our dispatch monitors Caltrans road status daily during storm season (December–April). For closures we re-route via US-101 south to Paso Robles then SR-46 West to SR-1 to access southern Big Sur, or limit service to the northern Carmel Highlands / Big Sur Lodge / Pfeiffer Big Sur area if the closure is south of Pfeiffer.
