About Nob Hill. Rising about 340 feet above Union Square, Nob Hill took its name from "nob" (a clipping of "nabob," a person of great wealth) after the railroad and silver barons of the 1870s — the "Big Four": Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins, Collis Huntington, and Charles Crocker — built mansions on its crown. The 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed nearly all of them; the lone survivor, the brownstone Flood Mansion, is now the Pacific-Union Club. The grand hotels that rose from the ashes made Nob Hill a byword for San Francisco luxury.

For Grace Cathedral weddings and concerts we stage on the Taylor Street side. Morning downhill runs to the Financial District are quick; allow a few extra minutes climbing back up at evening rush.
