Where the GM Desert Proving Ground sits. The General Motors Desert Proving Ground is a massive 3,300-acre vehicle testing facility in Yuma County, Arizona — about 30 miles northeast of Yuma and 175 miles southwest of Phoenix on Interstate 8. The facility was established by GM in 1953 to test vehicles under extreme-heat desert conditions and has been a critical part of GM's hot-weather durability program for over 70 years. New Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Buick, and Cruise (autonomous vehicle) prototypes are routinely tested here through Arizona summers when ambient temperatures can exceed 115°F. The facility includes high-speed test tracks, towing-and-hill-climb circuits, durability roads, climate chambers, and remote-area soaking pads. Engineers and program managers from GM's Warren MI Tech Center, Milford Proving Ground (MI), and Detroit-area suppliers fly in routinely. The proving ground is closed to the public.

Airport drive times from GM Desert Proving Ground. Yuma International Airport (YUM) is the closest commercial airport, 35-45 minutes south. Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is 2.5-3 hours northeast via I-8 and I-10 — most GM engineering travelers fly into PHX because of its better connectivity to Detroit (DTW direct daily). Phoenix-Mesa Gateway (IWA) is 2.5-3 hours northeast. For private aviation, Yuma MCAS / Yuma International (YUM) handles GA traffic, and Phoenix Goodyear (GYR) is 2.5 hours east — many GM jet flights land at GYR and ground-transfer the rest of the way.
