Where Jensen Beach sits. Jensen Beach is a Martin County unincorporated coastal community of roughly 12,000 about 35 miles north of West Palm Beach, on the mainland and barrier-island sides of the Indian River Lagoon between Stuart (south) and Hutchinson Island (east). The community was founded in the 1880s by Danish immigrant John Laurence Jensen, who established a pineapple plantation here; for a brief period in the late 1800s Jensen Beach was known as the "Pineapple Capital of the World," producing more than a million crates of pineapple per year before the Great Freeze of 1894-95 destroyed the industry. Today Jensen Beach is best known for the Treasure Coast beaches (Bathtub Beach, Stuart Beach), the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center, and the Treasure Coast Square mall. The community is the historic landing site of the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet shipwrecks that give the Treasure Coast its name.
